DeMarcus Cousins Sweepstakes is Open for Business Once Again

The never ending roller coaster that is DeMarcus Cousins’ career is taking another turn. Cousins has been bouncing around the league from contender to contender after his departure from Sacramento and his devastating injuries. He seemed to have found a place to stay in Houston alongside John Wall. Cousins looked like he was returning to form with the Rockets who had just recently guaranteed his contract through the remainder of the 2020–21 season.

Shortly after his contract became fully guaranteed, he and the Rockets decided to mutually part ways. Now, a fully healthy DeMarcus Cousins is back on the market to be picked up by any team. Early indications look like the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers are the main suitors to land Cousins. It has been reported that Cousins would love to join forces with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden in Brooklyn.

The Lakers seemingly could use the services of Cousins a lot more than the Nets… However, Cousins who has been ring chasing for a few years now must think the Nets have the edge over the Lakers for a Title shot making them more appealing to him at this point.

The reason I say the Lakers would benefit from adding Cousins was evident in their recent game against Brooklyn. While both teams were handicapped by injuries, the Nets look like the more well rounded team. Cousins, now that he seems to be rounding back into form, would fit in great in the Lakers rotation, especially with the absence of Anthony Davis.

I think Cousins would get way more opportunity to do what he does best on the Lakers as opposed to the Nets. However, the Lakers do have a deeper big man rotation than Brooklyn which would make some say that Cousins wouldn’t have enough opportunity in LA. While this may be true, the Lakers big man rotation is pretty weak. Marc Gasol and Montrezl Harrell are proving no match for other bench frontcourts around the league.

Cousins would give the Lakers second unit some much needed stability with his scoring and physicality. Especially come playoff time.

While it is still up in the air on where Cousins will land, I think it is a safe bet to say that he will be wearing either a Lakers or Nets uniform in the very near future.
